Training of Patient Counselors

SAATHII in partnership with TamilNadu Health Systems Project (TNHSP) and South India AIDS Action Programme (SIAAP) conducted training of patient counselors in government hospitals from October 2010 to March 2011. Patient Counselors, located in secondary care hospitals of TamilNadu, provide guidance to patients visiting hospitals on availability and usage of facilities and services, counsel them on ante-natal care and post-natal care, and provide in-patient counseling.

The project conducted a training needs assessment study among patient counselors. The project thus developed facilitator and participant training manuals.

Implementing Project Outreach:

17 master trainers from four regional training institutes of TamilNadu Health and Family Welfare Department and 567 patient counselors were trained on counseling and interpersonal communication, maternal and child health, and HIV/AIDS.

The Patient Counselors training project was funded by APAC-VHS/USAID.
